Laurie Heron McCown is a licensed Iowa attorney with extensive experience in government law, cybersecurity, probate litigation, estate planning, privacy, procurement, and regulatory compliance. She recently procured a $3,204,362.50 employment law judgment. She has attained certification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals, including her CIPP/US and CIPP/EU certifications, along with a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

As an Assistant Attorney General, she spent a decade advising state agencies, drafting statutes and administrative rules, and litigating complex matters in administrative, state, and federal courts. Laurie also clerked for Justice Bruce Zager on the Iowa Supreme Court, where she conducted legal research and assisted in drafting judicial opinions in highly-contested legal matters. The case she litigated that gets quoted most often comes from the Eighth Circuit. “We hold that Iowa is a state.” Yuska v. Iowa Dep’t of Revenue (In re Yuska), 567 B.R. 545, 548 (B.A.P. 8th Cir. 2017).

In addition to her legal practice, Laurie worked as a cybersecurity expert for federal law enforcement at the U.S. Department of State. In this role, she advised federal workers on cybersecurity hygiene and open source intelligence gathering (OSINT); helped draft cybersecurity and artificial intelligence policies; and investigated network intrusions, passport fraud, human trafficking, and other crimes related to the work of the State Department. She possesses multiple technical certifications in networking, security, and related areas.

Laurie received her juris doctorate degree from Drake University in 2012 and her master’s degree in cybersecurity and information assurance in 2024. She is fluent in Spanish.
